French paper sizes

Information

In 1967 France started using the ISO paper size standard. However before this, France had their own paper size system. The paper formats in this system follow the AFNOR standard which was established in 1926. Some of these paper formats are still used today. When the paper is handcrafted, they are branded with watermarks. The watermarks are where the names of the paper come from. Some of the formats are known as double and quadruple versions. An example of a double version is Carré (450mm × 560mm) and Grande Monde (900mm × 1260mm), whereby the smallest side is doubled. An example of a quadruple version is Cloche (300mm × 400mm) and Soleil (600mm × 800mm), whereby both sides are doubled.
